The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) is investigating an incident involving the Edmonton Police Service (EPS) in which a man was seriously injured.
On Feb. 10, 2026, shortly after 6 p.m., EPS received a 911 call from a woman in a downtown Edmonton apartment. The caller reported that an intoxicated man was inside her apartment, and he was not welcome.
While on their way to the apartment, officers learned that the man was the subject of an outstanding warrant.
After entering the apartment, officers arrested the man without incident and put him in handcuffs. One officer placed the man with his chest against a wall while a second officer spoke with the woman to gather more information.
At one point, the man began turning away from the wall and toward the officer holding him. The officer then took the man to the floor in a forward, facedown position.
During the takedown, the man’s face struck the corner of a wooden dining room chair. He suffered a cut lip, a small cut near his right eyebrow and a black eye. He immediately became unconscious.
Officers then called for emergency medical services. An ambulance took the man to hospital, where doctors determined he had sustained a brain hemorrhage. He later regained consciousness and discharged himself from hospital.
The Police Review Commission has directed ASIRT to investigate the event as a Level 1 matter, which the Police Act defines as a case involving serious injury, death, or serious or sensitive allegations relating to the actions of an officer.
Information released today reflects what investigators know at this early stage. The investigation is ongoing, and ASIRT has no further information to release at this time.
ASIRT operates within the Police Review Commission, an independent, civilian-led agency that investigates criminal allegations and public complaints involving police services in Alberta. ASIRT objectively investigates incidents that result in death, serious injury and potential criminal offences involving all Alberta police services, as well as serious matters involving peace officers.
