ASIRT investigating death following Edmonton Police Service arrest

The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) is investigating the death of a man following his arrest by the Edmonton Police Service (EPS).

Shortly after 7:30 p.m. on Sept. 16, 2026, EPS received multiple reports of a man acting erratically near Rapperswill Drive and 173a Avenue in northwest Edmonton. Callers reported that he was trying to enter homes and damaging vehicles.

An officer arrived a few minutes later, told the man to get on the ground, and handcuffed him without incident.

The man then began struggling while on the ground. At one point, bystanders helped the officer hold the man’s legs down. The officer called for paramedics and additional police units arrived within the next minute.

Within five minutes, the man went unconscious. Officers assessed his condition and an off-duty nurse who was at the scene began CPR.
Paramedics took the 54-year-old man to hospital in serious condition and he died on Sept.19.

The information in this release reflects what ASIRT investigators know at this early stage and what they can share while maintaining the integrity of the investigation

ASIRT is part of the Police Review Commission, an independent civilian-led agency. ASIRT investigates potential criminal offences involving police across Alberta, including cases where the actions of a police officer may have resulted in serious injury or death.
