The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team is investigating the death of a man after an interaction with Edmonton Police Service officers.
Shortly after 8 a.m. on Feb. 21, 2026, a resident phoned 911 to report that an injured man had entered a seniors’ residence near downtown Edmonton and was asking for help.
Police officers arrived at the locked building, and a resident let them in. Once inside, officers located the injured man and called Emergency Medical Services.
Police then tried to restrain the man. With help from several civilians who were present, officers were able to gain control of him. Once restrained, the man experienced a medical emergency.
Officers began CPR until paramedics arrived and took over. EMS transported the man to hospital, where he died.
Because the death occurred following a police interaction, the Police Review Commission has directed ASIRT to investigate the event as a Level 1 matter, which the Police Act defines as a case involving serious injury, death, or serious or sensitive allegations relating to the actions of an officer.
Information released at this stage is based on the initial information available to investigators. The investigation is ongoing, and ASIRT has no further information to release at this time.
ASIRT operates within the Police Review Commission, an independent, civilian-led agency that investigates criminal allegations and public complaints involving police services in Alberta. ASIRT independently and objectively investigates incidents that result in death, serious injury and potential criminal offences involving all Alberta police services, as well as serious matters involving peace officers.
