ASIRT charges Edmonton Police Service officer with sexual assault

On March 11, 2024, the Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) was directed to investigate allegations involving an off-duty Edmonton Police Service officer stemming from an event the previous day.

ASIRT’s investigation yielded reasonable grounds to believe an offence had been committed. As required by the Police Act, ASIRT sent the file to the Alberta Crown Prosecution Service, which reviewed the evidence and determined whether the case met the standard for prosecution.

ASIRT executive director Matthew Block reviewed the investigation and the Crown’s opinion, determining that the officer should be charged.

On Aug. 26, 2026, ASIRT arrested Const. Alec Chomik and charged him with two counts of sexual assault. Chomik was released on an undertaking and scheduled to appear in the Alberta Court of Justice in Edmonton on Oct. 7, 2026.

With this matter now before the courts, no further information will be released.
