ASIRT investigating death after Brooks RCMP shooting

The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team is investigating after an RCMP officer in Brooks fatally shot a man.

On July 15, 2026, at about 4:15 p.m., Brooks RCMP officers went to a home to arrest a man in connection with a break and enter reported earlier that day. Another person answered the door and told officers the man they were looking for was inside. 

After waiting outside for several minutes, the officers were invited to enter the home.

The man came from the back of the home, saw the officers and left through a side door. He then ran toward a nearby alley, followed by one of the officers.

In the alley, the officer told the man to drop a knife he was holding. The man ran towards the officer and, in the incident that followed, the officer fired their gun and struck the man.

Officers provided first aid and continued until paramedics arrived. The man died at the scene. During an examination of the scene, investigators found two knives.

The Police Review Commission has directed ASIRT to investigate this incident as a Level 1 matter. Under the Police Act, this includes cases involving serious injury or death, or serious or sensitive concerns about an officer’s actions.
 
ASIRT will investigate the police use of force and the circumstances surrounding the man’s death.

The information in this release reflects what investigators know at this early stage, and what they can share while maintaining the integrity of the investigation. The investigation remains ongoing, and no further information is available for release at this time.

ASIRT is part of the Police Review Commission, an independent civilian-led agency. ASIRT investigates potential criminal offences involving police across Alberta, including cases where the actions of a police officer may have resulted in serious injury or death.
