RCMP officer charged with assault causing bodily harm

The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) has charged an RCMP officer in connection with an assault on a woman in police custody.

ASIRT investigated an allegation of excessive force that occurred while an officer was placing a woman in cells at the Gleichen RCMP detachment on the night of Oct. 30, 2025. Police arrested the woman for mischief earlier that evening.

The evidence gathered during ASIRT’s investigation provided reasonable grounds to believe that an offence had been committed. Following a review of the investigation and further review and advice from the Alberta Crown Prosecution Service that a charge be laid, ASIRT executive director Matthew Block determined that the involved officer should be charged.

On Oct. 22, 2026, ASIRT arrested Const. Marie-Helene Dupere and charged her with assault causing bodily harm. She was released on an undertaking and is scheduled to appear before the Alberta Court of Justice at Siksika Nation on Nov. 26, 2026.

With this matter now before the courts, no further information will be released.

Questions about employment-related matters, including Dupere’s duty status, should be directed to the RCMP.

ASIRT is part of the Police Review Commission, an independent civilian-led agency. ASIRT investigates potential criminal offences involving police across Alberta, including cases where the actions of a police officer may have resulted in serious injury or death.
