ASIRT investigating fatal officer-involved shooting in Edmonton

The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) is investigating a fatal shooting involving the Edmonton Police Service on Aug. 24, 2026.

Officers arrived at the Hilton Garden Inn in west Edmonton at around 7:30 p.m. in response to a call about a man with a gun. Bystanders and hotel staff told police there was a man on the second floor acting erratically.  Officers found a man holding scissors in the second-floor hallway. The man repeatedly told officers to kill him.

Officers tried to negotiate his surrender for about 30 minutes while hotel guests sheltered in place.  The man ignored officers’ repeated requests to drop the scissors. Officers then used a conducted energy weapon and less-lethal rounds, but they didn’t succeed in getting him to surrender.

The man dropped the scissors, but while police were continuing negotiations, he picked them up and advanced toward officers. Shortly after 8 p.m., two officers fired their guns and struck the man.

Officers provided immediate first aid until paramedics arrived. The 57-year-old man died at the scene.

The information in this release reflects what ASIRT investigators know at this early stage and what they can share while maintaining the integrity of the investigation. The investigation remains ongoing, and no further information is available at this time.
