ASIRT investigating serious injury of man after Calgary police arrest

The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team is investigating after a man was taken to hospital in serious condition following his arrest by the Calgary Police Service.

On June 17, 2026, shortly before 5 p.m.., Calgary police arrested a man at a home in Huntington Hills. Before the arrest, tactical officers surrounded the property, told nearby residents to stay inside and called for the man to come out.

General duty officers took the man to the police arrest processing unit, arriving about 5:30 p.m.

On arrival, an officer called for medical help after observing signs that the man was in physical distress. An officer described the man as sweaty, clammy and pale.

Police removed the man’s handcuffs and put them back on with his hands in front of his body.

Staff at the facility provided medical care before EMS arrived and paramedics took over.  Before 7 p.m., paramedics took the man to Foothills Medical Centre in serious condition. As of last week he remained in hospital in stable condition.

The Police Review Commission has directed ASIRT to investigate this incident as a Level 1 matter. Under the Police Act, this includes cases involving serious injury or death, or serious or sensitive concerns about an officer’s actions.

The information in this release reflects what investigators know at this early stage, and what they can share while maintaining the integrity of the investigation. The investigation remains ongoing, and no further information is available for release at this time.

ASIRT is part of the Police Review Commission, an independent civilian-led agency. ASIRT investigates potential criminal offences involving police across Alberta, including cases where the actions of a police officer may have resulted in serious injury or death.
