RCMP officer charged with two criminal offences

On Oct. 8, 2025, the Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) was directed to investigate an allegation of excessive force involving an RCMP officer.

The investigation stems from an officer’s use of a less-lethal baton launcher while the RCMP responded to a call about a man with a large knife in the Atikameg townsite on Sept. 10, 2025. The investigation also examined the officer’s reports and statements.
 
The evidence gathered during ASIRT’s investigation provided reasonable grounds to believe that an offence had been committed. Following a review of the investigation, ASIRT executive director Matthew Block determined that the involved officer should be charged.

On Sept. 10, 2026, ASIRT arrested Const. Tyler Bell and charged him with assault with a weapon and breach of trust. He was released on an undertaking and is scheduled to appear at the Alberta Court of Justice in Slave Lake on Oct. 14, 2026 

With this matter before the courts, no further information will be released.

ASIRT is part of the Police Review Commission, an independent civilian-led agency. ASIRT investigates potential criminal offences involving police across Alberta, including cases where the actions of a police officer may have resulted in serious injury or death.
