The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) is investigating the death of a woman following an arrest by Edmonton Police Service (EPS).
On March 26, 2026, at approximately 6:30 p.m., officers responded to a call about a woman causing a disturbance at Mill Woods area restaurant. Witnesses reported that she was acting erratically, yelling, and frightening customers. When police arrived, the woman ran into another nearby restaurant, where she hid in a washroom. Officers found and arrested her, then called paramedics to attend the scene.
The woman did not cooperate with their attempts to assess her condition. At approximately 7 p.m., she was transported to the EPS Detainee Management Unit (DMU) — a specialized unit for processing and monitoring at-risk or vulnerable detainees.
During transport, she continued to behave erratically. Upon arrival, DMU staff found the woman unresponsive and called EMS to take her to the hospital, where she died shortly after.
The Police Review Commission has directed ASIRT to investigate this incident as a Level 1 matter. Under the Police Act, this includes cases involving serious injury or death, or serious or sensitive concerns about an officer’s actions.
