The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team is investigating a fatal shooting during an RCMP response to a domestic disturbance call near Irricana.
On July 3, 2026, at about 6:20 p.m., Airdrie RCMP received a 911 call from a woman reporting a domestic disturbance involving her boyfriend at a rural home near Irricana.
Two RCMP officers responded and, as they approached the home, they heard yelling from inside before the woman came out through the front door.
The officers stayed outside near the entrance and called out to the man to come outside. He did not respond.
A few minutes later, he came to the front door and began walking toward police while holding what appeared to be a handgun. During the interaction that followed, one officer fired his service pistol multiple times, striking the man.
The officers provided first aid and called for emergency medical services. However, paramedics pronounced the man dead at the scene.
The incident was captured on both officers’ body-worn cameras.
The Police Review Commission has directed ASIRT to investigate this incident as a Level 1 matter. Under the Police Act, this includes cases involving serious injury or death, or serious or sensitive concerns about an officer’s actions. ASIRT’s investigation will examine the use of force by police.
