RCMP officer charged with four offences related to intimate partner violence

On July 9, 2026, the Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) was directed to investigate allegations of intimate partner violence involving an off-duty RCMP officer in Blackfalds.

The evidence gathered during ASIRT’s investigation provided reasonable grounds to believe that an offence had been committed. Following a review of the investigation, ASIRT executive director Matthew Block determined that the officer should be charged.

On Aug. 18, 2026, the officer was arrested and charged with assault, uttering threats, unlawful confinement, and intimidation. He was released on an undertaking and is scheduled for first appearance on Sept. 24, 2026 in the Alberta Court of Justice in Red Deer.

Because this case involves allegations of intimate partner violence, ASIRT is not naming the charged officer to protect the identity of the victim.

“This is a rare exception to ASIRT’s practice of publicly identifying officers charged with criminal offences. This decision was made to prioritize a trauma-informed approach and the privacy of the victim, while also ensuring public transparency that a police officer has been criminally charged,” said Katherine Murphy, CEO of the Police Review Commission.

No further information will be released while this matter is before the courts.

Questions about employment-related matters, including the officer’s duty status, should be directed to the involved police service.

ASIRT is part of the Police Review Commission, an independent civilian-led agency. ASIRT investigates potential criminal offences involving police across Alberta, including cases where the actions of a police officer may have resulted in serious injury or death.
